Subject Overview

 At GCSE two Themes are studied:

Theme 1 – Investigating small business. This includes five topics:

Enterprise and entrepreneurship, 1.2 Spotting a business opportunity, 1.3 Putting a business idea into practice, 1.4 Making the business effective, 1.5 Understanding external influences on business.

Written examination: 1 hour and 30 minutes

50% of the qualification, 90 marks

Theme 2 – Building a Business. This includes five topics:

2.1 Growing the business, 2.2 Making marketing decisions, 2.3 Making operational decisions, 2.4 Making financial decisions, 2.5 Making human resource decisions

Written examination: 1 hour and 30 minutes

50% of the qualification, 90 marks

At A Level, As and a A Level topics are studied:

AS: What is Business, Managers, Leaders and decision making, marketing, operations, finance, human resources

A Level: Analysing the strategic position of a business, choosing strategic direction, how to pursue strategies, managing strategic change.

Three examination paper are taken:

Paper 1: Business 1 - written exam: 2 hours, 100 marks in total, 33.3% of A-level

Questions - Three compulsory sections:

Paper 2: Business 2 - written exam: 2 hours, 100 marks in total, 33.3% of A-level

Questions - Three data response

Paper 3: Business 3 - written exam: 2 hours, 100 marks in total, 33.3% of A-level

Questions - One compulsory case study followed by approximately six questions.
