Liz Mulkerrin – Head of Transformation, Sky News

When were you at Polam?

1981 – 1995

What did you study at Polam?

French, German, Economics and General Studies

What are you doing today?

Head of Transformation, Sky News. For the past eight and a half years I have been Head of HR for Sky Content. That incorporates Sky Sports, Sky News, Entertainment Channels, Broadcast Operations & Creative Services. My role is to transform the culture of the newsroom in the wake of the Leveson inquiry – in particular my objectives are focused on people and culture, improving communication and feedback, ensuring consistency and fairness in the treatment of all, succession planning, diversity and setting up a Training Academy of Excellence for Journalism.

How did Polam help you to get there?

Polam not only gave me a great grounding in education, but taught me to be ambitious, to believe in myself, to always be courteous and polite, and that if you work hard you can achieve.

What’s your best memory of Polam?

Some of the great theatrical productions the school put on, speech days in the Liddiard Theatre, school trips to the Farne Islands, and the streaker on the sports field during my English GCSE written exam!

Who was you favourite teacher?

Mrs Clayson – she taught me to read and write in Kindergarten!
