Sport

Sport at Polam Hall is about giving every student the chance to shine and for this we offer an all-inclusive, well-structured PE and Games programme. It allows students to play and compete whatever their ability – be it participating in house matches within School, or representing Polam Hall at league or County level.

Our house sports competitions foster teamwork and leadership skills. Our students take their sport very seriously and are always determined to do their very best.

Autumn Term

The main focus in the Autumn Term for our seniors is rugby, football and hockey and we run a regular fixtures schedule with matches against local schools throughout this first term. Netball, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, and cross-country also part of the sporting curriculum from September to December.

Football is becoming increasingly popular among the Juniors and we have two successful Under 9s and Under 11s teams. Young footballers entering seniors also get chance to compete in Darlington 9-a-side league for Year 7s. Our girls Under 11s team has also won various league and friendly games and shows great potential for the future.

Spring Term

2193-300x200The annual  swimming gala is the highlight of the Spring Term with preparatory swimming lessons taking place from the Juniors up to Year 9. The other main sporting activities this term are netball – where our girls compete at a high level winning many local tournaments in all age groups – and basketball. This is taken very seriously by the older boys who, as part of either the Under 16 or Under 18 basketball team, train regularly after school from September through to Easter.

Summer Term

Summer Term starts with our Sports Awards Evening which is an opportunity to celebrate our pupils’ sporting success with their families. Prizes and trophies include sports colours, various players of the year, and the ‘Polam Hall Sports Personality of the Year’ which is voted for by the pupils, staff and parents.

Sports fixtures this term are in athletics, rounders, cricket and tennis. There are excellent opportunities to perform for the county and in local competitions against other schools, in athletics especially, and our lunchtime athletics and tennis clubs are always well attended. The cricket team participates in local festivals and competes in friendly hardball fixtures.

Further highlights in this final term include, invariably competing at inter-county level, a busy home and away rounders fixtures list, and, of course, cricket.

All-year activity

As a school we are committed to developing all our young sports enthusiasts equally, whatever their chosen sport. We try and introduce as wide a range of sporting activities as possible across the year, responding to particular interests and needs as they arise, including trampolining, cycling, and other year-round activities.

Badminton is played all year round at the Dolphin Centre and all our teams are becoming increasingly successful. The boys have competed at a high level against other school clubs while the girls have reached the National Finals in both Key Stage 3 and 4 competitions, achieving 8th and 9th places out of a participating 1,500 schools.

Table Tennis is another growing sport in School. Darlington Table Tennis Club coach our boys and girls every Tuesday and selected players go on to join more elite training sessions on Friday evenings.
