A Level Studies

A Level courses at Polam Hall follow two patterns depending on the subject.

Some subjects are offered as an AS qualification in Year 12 (made up of 2 or 3 units) followed by an A2 qualification in Year 13, which then becomes the full A Level, also made up of 2 or 3 units. AS and A2 courses each contribute 50% of the final A Level.

Other subjects are taught under the newer system of a 2-year course leading to the full A level taken at the end of Year 13 and with no AS qualification in Year 12.

Most students choose to do four subjects in Year 12 and carry on with three of these in Year 13. Each subject has 4.5 timetabled hours per week in Year 12 increasing to 5 hours in Year 13. Students are expected to spend at least the equivalent time working independently as background reading and individual research are vital for achieving high grades at A Level. We also offer some supervised study periods in Year 12 to encourage effective work habits.

External examinations take place in May/June each year.

Enrichment

Enrichment and PE are part of the Sixth Form timetable and both are compulsory. Enrichment is a 12-month multi-discipline course involving a cross section of subject teachers and outside speakers and is taken in Year 12. Topics covered range from personal safety, money management, politics, health and drugs awareness, business and careers. The course is structured to encourage independent learning through practical investigations and original research.

We also offer students the opportunity to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and this can be taken as part of their Enrichment programme too.

You can read more about the Extended Project Qualification by clicking on the EPQ icon above.
