Sixth Form

Most of our GCSE students at Polam Hall stay with us to study for A Levels in our Sixth Form. We also have students joining us from local schools and, thanks to our boarding facilities, students from further afield.

The attraction of joining the Sixth Form for most students is the fact that we are still relatively small in comparison with most other A Level providers. Study is in small groups and tends to be discussion-led with every student receiving close individual attention. Specialist subject teachers get to know them well and are able to offer tailored support.

We describe ourselves as a ‘traditional’ Sixth Form in that we focus on the principal academic subjects, and subject combinations, recognised by the best universities. Tutorial-style teaching is backed up by up to date careers advice and help with completing UCAS applications. We also have a unique tutor system where every student gets to choose a member of the teaching staff as their own personal tutor who will support them throughout the two years.

Our Sixth Formers have use of their own separate building, Plantation (though known affectionately as Plant) set up for private study and socialising with a mixture of quiet areas, commons rooms, kitchen, and TV. There is also use of the School’s IT facilities and well-stocked library.

As well as academic success, we also attach great importance to developing self-reliance, self-motivation and a sense of belonging. All Sixth Formers have opportunities to demonstrate leadership and teamwork skills by taking on additional responsibilities within their chosen extra-curricular activities and through the School’s junior rotary club InterACT and other charitable causes. We require all our students to show evidence of maturity, independence and initiative – all vital qualities looked for by employers and universities.

New applicants

For those interested in joining us at Year 12 we have a Sixth Form open evening in the Autumn term with applicants being invited back into School for guidance interviews in March. We then have an induction day after the GCSE exams where all applicants join us for the day to participate in lessons and other activities as a taster of Sixth Form life at Polam Hall.
